US Passport Photo Requirements

An incorrect photo is one of the most common reasons for US passport application delays. Here are the official requirements from the US Department of State.

Size and Format

  • Size: 2×2 inches (51×51 mm)
  • Head height: 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to top of head
  • Color: Full color only — no black and white
  • Paper: Matte or glossy photo paper

Background

Plain white or off-white background. No patterns, shadows, or other people visible.

Expression and Pose

  • Face the camera directly — front view only
  • Neutral expression or natural relaxed smile
  • Both eyes open and clearly visible
  • Mouth closed

Glasses

Glasses are not permitted in US passport photos since 2016, except for documented medical reasons with a signed physician's note.

Headwear

No hats or head coverings unless required by religious or medical need. The full face must remain visible.
